Students With Surf Life Saving Beach Buggy

Insightful and Epic Surf Life Saving Lesson - Noosa

Our Noosa TAP Students Took Part in an Insightful Surf Life Saving Lesson with Noosa Heads SLS Club!

Surf lifesaving is a volunteer-based movement that originated in Australia in the early 20th century. It has since spread to many countries across the globe. Surf Lifesavers are people with a passion for the ocean, trained in essential skills to respond swiftly to emergencies, both in and out of the water.

On a beautifully sunny winter afternoon, our students dived straight into an insightful and interactive lesson. The students learned first-hand what the Noosa Heads Surf Lifesavers do on a daily basis, and why their role is so important for the safety of beachgoers and ocean lovers!

The group were introduced to the Beach Buggy - a vehicle used to patrol the shoreline and quickly respond to emergencies. After a short stroll along the beach, we arrived at the Lifeguard Tower! We were given a tour of the tower, where lifeguards watch over the water, looking out for potential dangers such as rip currents and swimmers in distress.

The students learned about the iconic Red and Yellow Flags. When visiting a patrolled beach in Australia, there are red and yellow flags hoisted in the sand. These flags mark the designated swimming area monitored by surf lifesavers. Staying between the flags ensures you are in the safest part of the beach and under the watchful gaze of these dedicated volunteers!

We then jumped straight into the interactive activities! Firstly, the students did some warm-up exercises and sprints to get themselves prepared and limber! The students also listened to some teachings from an experienced lifesaver, and learned the different skills that are needed for the position. Next up, the group were challenged to run into the water at speed, practicing for a real-life rescue scenario - where they would need to act fast! They had so much fun splashing into the beautiful ocean!

We learned about the responsibilities and duties of the Surf Lifesavers which include:

  • Beach Surveillance: Lifesavers keep a watchful eye on beachgoers, scanning the waters for potential dangers.
  • Rescue Operations: Trained in various rescue techniques, surf lifesavers spring into action whenever someone gets caught in the current of a rip, or faces difficulty swimming.
  • First Aid and Medical Care: From minor cuts and bruises to more serious incidents, surf lifesavers are equipped to administer first aid and stabilise patients until professional help arrives.
  • Education and Prevention: Surf lifesavers also play a proactive role in educating the public about water safety.

The students had a go at an epic rescue of their partner from the ocean using their newly acquired skills! For our final activity of the afternoon, the students spent time trying to catch some waves on the surfboard - for some it was their first ever time on a board!

After an insightful afternoon packed full of learning and activities, the students departed with a newfound sense of confidence in their abilities. Our students smashed the activities and were tired out after all of the challenging exercises! They are super keen to get out and try a surfing lesson next week to try out their new skills!

Students Creating Their Reusable Bag!

Creative and Conscious Consumers - Reusable Bag Making - Noosa

Our Noosa TAP Students Applied Their Skills For Our Creative and Conscious Consumers Reusable Bag Making Workshop!

In a world increasingly aware of the impact of single-use plastics on our environment, it has become important for individuals to make conscious choices that promote sustainability. One simple yet effective step towards reducing plastic waste is by embracing reusable bags! These eco-friendly alternatives not only help conserve resources but also allow us to express our creativity and style.

Our TAP students had a wonderful time learning about the importance of sustainability, conscious fashion choices and had a go at making their own reusable bag!

Plastic bags are notorious for their long-lasting harm to the environment. They take hundreds of years to decompose, posing a threat to wildlife, and polluting our oceans. Our students made an eco-conscious choice, by making their bag out of secondhand clothing. They firstly chose a style that stood out to them and with excitement started their own creative projects!

This workshop offered the perfect opportunity for students to unleash their creativity. Some students decided to create a little differently to others - some chose to make the bag smaller,  adjusted the size of the frills, and others created a longer handle on their bag!

The reusable bag making was not only a fun but also educational activity. The students learned about environmental responsibility and the significance of reducing plastic waste. The students also developed their team working skills, helping to cut and tie their friends bags when they needed a little help. It became a collective effort, just like the one needed to protect our planet for future generations!

The students did an amazing job - we loved the funky designs on the bags and the creativity used! They now all have an eco-conscious bag to take home and use for many years to come :)

Mount Coolum Hike

Noosa - The Wonderful Walkers Hiking Club

Noosa - The Wonderful Walkers Hiking Club

Did you know, Mount Coolum was created around 26 million years ago and is one of several isolated volcanic peaks found on the Sunshine Coast! The other most prominent ones being the Glass House Mountains.

On Monday afternoon the new TAP students put in a fantastic effort and climbed all the way up the many steps of Mount Coolum! On their way up, the students were in awe of the magnificent coastal views of the Sunshine Coast seen through the trees.

The three students did a wonderful job of working as a team during the climb, having fun and sharing stories as well as taking breaks when their teammates needed to rest and have some water. They were delighted to reach the top on a beautiful, sunny afternoon.

The students enjoyed exploring and spotting some wonderful Australian nature on the walk. Firstly, they were surprised by a leisurely roaming Brush Turkey (Alectura lathami)! As well as identifying some interesting birds and trees including: Honeyeater bird (Meliphagidae), Willie Wagtail bird (Rhipidura Leucophrys), and the Scribbly Gum trees (Eucalyptus haemastoma). The students were impressed with the unique markings on the gum tree!

We had a wonderful time hiking up and the students were thrilled to reach the top where they had a well-deserved rest and shared some laughter. The students took the opportunity to capture some awesome photos to send to their family and friends.

We are all looking forward to the next week of TAP activities where we will explore more wonderful Australian nature, enjoy fun team activities and learn about the local area.

Take a good look at the view from up there on top of Mount Coolum 😎
