Byron Bay - Juniors from Hiroshima - 1 August 2025
A Spectacular Week at Lexis Byron Bay with Our Hiroshima Juniors
Last week, we had the pleasure of hosting a group of 15 junior students from Hiroshima, Japan, here at Lexis Byron Bay for a fun-filled and immersive English language and cultural experience. The students stayed with local host families, giving them a unique opportunity to practice their English and experience Aussie life firsthand.

🌊 July 28th – Lighthouse Walk & Whale Spotting
After their English lessons on Monday, we set off on the iconic Cape Byron Lighthouse Walk. With stunning views all around, the highlight was definitely spotting whales in the distance – an unforgettable Byron moment for many of the students!

🥪 July 29th – Aussie Food Tasting & Slang Session
Tuesday was all about diving into Aussie culture – through food! Students joined others at Lexis for an Aussie food tasting session featuring:
- Tim Tams
- Fairy Bread
- Vegemite (a brave few tried it!)
- Lamingtons
- …and more Aussie favourites!
We also explored Aussie slang, from "arvo" (afternoon) to "no worries," and wrapped things up with a Kahoot quiz. Congrats to the winner who walked away with a full packet of Tim Tams!

🏖️ July 30th – Beach Games & Swimming
On Wednesday, we headed to the beach for some sunshine and sporty fun. Students played volleyball, soccer, and bocce , and a few brave souls took a refreshing swim in the ocean – a true Byron Bay experience!

🎨 July 31st – Boomerang Painting & Indigenous Art
Thursday’s arvo was a special one. Students learned about Australian Indigenous culture and took part in a boomerang painting workshop.
Boomerangs are traditional Aboriginal tools used for hunting, sport, and ceremony, and they carry great cultural significance. Today, they are also powerful symbols of Indigenous identity and connection to the land.
Students painted their boomerangs using dot painting, a distinctive form of Aboriginal art that uses dots and symbols to tell Dreamtime stories and express connection to Country. It was a meaningful and creative afternoon for all.

🌭 August 1st – Sausage Sizzle Celebration
We ended this spectacular week the Aussie way – with a sausage sizzle! There were smiles, sausages, and a few heartfelt goodbyes as we celebrated the end of a memorable week full of learning, laughter, and new friendships.

A big thank you to our wonderful juniors from Hiroshima for bringing such great energy to Lexis Byron Bay. We hope your week here was as unforgettable for you as it was for us – and we hope to see you back in Australia one day soon!
Byron Bay - Juniors from Hiroshima - 28 March 2025
Last week we welcomed a Junior group from Hiroshima, Japan.
They stayed for one week and made the absolute most of it!
On their first day, they took a placement test to assess their English level before joining their lessons. They finished at 1:30, and then, along with Rita, they drove to the Lighthouse and walked down to the school. The walk took about two hours. We were fortunate enough to spot a koala along the way, and to top off the day, we made a quick stop at Frankie’s for some ice cream.

Here are some photos of Ana and Asuka playing at the beach with their host family.

Aussie Food Tasting & Slang with Rita
On their second day after their lessons, they participated in Aussie food tasting and Aussie slang.

Byron Farmers Market with Rain
They went to the markets with their teacher Rain.

Beach Games with Rita
On the third day, we headed to the beach to enjoy a variety of beach games. The group played volleyball and boccia, while some students took a refreshing swim afterward.

Boomerang Painting with Rita
On Thursday, we spent the afternoon learning about Australian indigenous art. Students painted their own boomerangs using dot painting - a traditional type of painting used in indigenous communities. They all really enjoyed the activity, as it was very calm and relaxing.

Making Pizza with Rain
On their last day, students made pizza with their teacher Rain. It was an amazing way to celebrate their graduation day!

It was sad to say goodbye; even though it was a short time, they had the chance to taste the Australian life. They expressed they did not want to leave, and that they will come again in the future!

Byron Bay – Fun with Aboriginal Art and Boomerang Painting – 3 August 2023
Last Thursday, students learnt about aboriginal culture, storytelling symbols and art and then got to paint their own boomerang!

Boomerangs were used by Aboriginal peoples for hunting, warfare, art, in some religious ceremonies or instrumentally (clapped together) as accompaniment to songs and chants. They would often paint or carve designs on boomerangs to tell stories of legends and traditions.

When aboriginal artists paint it is typically from a bird’s-eye perspective looking down onto the land. From a high viewpoint everything starts to look like a dot, hence the iconic dot painting style. Symbols are used to tell a story, for example concentric circles often represents a campsite.

Some students went with the traditional Aboriginal painting style and earthy tones, while others went with their personal style, colours and technique. A couple told some interesting and amusing personal stories using the aboriginal symbols.

The final painted boomerangs were all unique in design and exhibited the diverse creative talents of our students.

Byron Bay – Joyous beach soccer and beach cricket – 2 August 2023
Last Wednesday a mix of our adult and junior students went to Byron’s Main Beach to play beach soccer and beach cricket.

It was the first-time playing cricket for our junior students. Bella explained the relaxed rules of beach cricket and it didn’t take long for everyone to feel comfortable batting, bowling and fielding.

All students were familiar with soccer, so we got straight into it. Team captains, Dominic and Seb, chose their team members and then we started with a fun warmup game. During the warmup both teams seemed evenly matched but in our competitive match Dominic’s team dominated, winning 3-0.

On the way back to school, Bella guided our students through town pointing out important establishments and popular spots to eat and shop along the way.

Byron Bay – Sensational Sausage Sizzle – 4 August 2023
On Friday, students had the delightful opportunity to partake in a quintessential Australian lunchtime experience, a Sausage Sizzle!

We cooked beef, pork and vegan snags on the barbie. The students were given the choice between white or multigrain bread, as well as Tomato, Mustard, or BBQ sauce. Of course, a genuine sausage sizzle wouldn’t be complete without the addition of grilled onions!

Everyone enjoyed our great Aussie tradition of a sausage sizzle and eagerly look forward to the next one.

Byron Bay – Intriguing Aussie Food and Slang – 1 August 2023
Yesterday our junior students from the Hiroshima prefecture were joined by our adult students for a huge Aussie Food and Slang activity. 😋

Aussie Food
The tasting menu included the following Aussie classics:
- Meat pies and sausage rolls with tomato sauce
- Vegemite on bread
- Lamingtons
- Fairy bread
- Milo
- Tim Tams
- Twisties
Bella introduced each food item, then explained its popular in Australia and how to eat it like an Aussie.

What did our students think?
- The meat pie / sausage roll with tomato sauce combination was a resounding hit!
- Vegemite was polarising, a few loved it, but most were disgusted and confused about its popularity here
- The Lamingtons were enjoyed by all, and the favourite for some.
- The consensus on fairy bread was so-so, just like sugar on bread
- There were mixed opinions on Milo and it was familiar to those from Japan and Chile
- Tim Tams were known and loved by most students and for our first timers it was a delicious surprise
- Finally, Twisties were liked but, “nothing special” for most.
Overall, it was an enjoyable tasting experience. Thank you to all students who participated with open minds and palates!
Aussie Slang

For the Aussie slang portion of the activity, students started by watching entertaining clips of Aussies using slang. As a group we tried to interpret the slang and our Aussie teacher Bella revealed the meaning of each slang word.
Some of the slang students learnt included:
- Breaky = Breakfast
- Maccas = McDonalds
- Straya = Australia
- Avo = Avocado
- Mate = Friend
- Sunnies = Sunglasses
- G’day = Good day
- Arvo = Afternoon
- Hubby = Husband
- Tinnie = Beer
- Sheila = woman
- Barbie = Barbeque
And so many more!

To finish we played a fun game of slang bingo with the prize being more Aussie food!
